Newly Graduated Regional Superior, Bro. Felim Ryan, pictured with David Wekula (left) and Sylvanus Wafula following their graduation in August 2003 from St Luke's Registered Community Health Nursing School at North Kinangop. They completed a three and a half year training course in this school which is run by the Kenya Episcopal Conference and had the best results in the country last year. Bro. Swidbert was one of the six pioneer Brothers to arrive in Singapore on the sailing ship La Julie on 29th March, 1852 having sailed from the River Scheldt in Antwerp on 8th December 1851.

He was from County Carlow.  Originally a Patrician Brother sent to Baltimore, USA, from his community in Mountrath with other Patricians to open an orphanage in Baltimore. The prject did not get off the gorund. On the advice of the bishop of Baltimore he joined the De La Salle novitiate and later travelled via Paris and Antwerp to Singapore. He died there three years later in 1855 and is probably buried in the Good Shepherd Cathedral.

A commemortaive plaque in the wall of the right wing records hsi burial. He was much respected and revered. Traditions ays that such was the competition to carry his coffin it almost became a riot! In the scuffle a certain Mr Bateman's hat fell into the grave. As a tribute, the same man, in 1907, was responsible for the placement of the plaque in memory of the much loved Bro. Swidbert Doyle.

Congratulations to David

In a recent ceremony is Galway, Bro. David Byrne received a Mayor's award in recognition of his contribution to services in the city. His work with the homeless and Samaritans was mentioned in the Mayor's citation.

Here David is pictured with his award which also included a cheque for six hundred euro which he has donated to the Aids Orphans Fund in Eldoret, Kenya.
