St Michael's Boys School Wagga Wagga
Louis Hunt, community member 1893The Brothers commenced a primary school at Wagga in 1890, the first Brothers being Andrew Dwyer and Louis Hynes. Brother Laurence Ryan was superior in the years 1891 to 1893.

In 1895 Brother Anthony Lee visitated Wagge and Albury and reported: "The schools of each of these houses are going satisfactorily and the Brothers are well contented and happy." However, he apparently found the lodgings of the Brothers and the financial situation unsatisfactory.

One of the very few details we have is that the people and priests of Wagga were dismayed when the school was closed in 1898. It is recorded that the great majority of Brothers in Australia were opposed to the closure.

In the "Freeman's Journal" of January 4, 1896, there appears a report of the annual break-up of the school. There was a concert and "Dramatic entertainment". Recitations of Irish poems and Irish music had an important place in the entertainment. Miss Jospehine O'Connor acted as accompanist. Very Rev. T.Slattery distributed the prizes, which consisted of "well selected and handsomely bound books." "Since the arrival of the Patrician Brothers in Wagga great strides have been made in the education of the boys of the district, and ech year they are well up in the public examinations."
