Early Enrolments
In the early years of Holy Cross's history, Ryde was not the residential suburb it is today, and so most of the students attending the College came from the country and boarded.

The first house occupied by the Patrician Brothers at Ryde was on the opposite side of Victoria Road from where the College is today. The  house still stands today, but it is now surrounded by a recently built housing village. It was purchased by the Sydney diocese and was used for retired priests. With the permission of Cardinal Moran Holy Cross opened its doors here in 1891 when there were just four day pupils and four boarders. The first Patrician community was made up of Fintan O'Neill, Columba O'Reilly, James Ryan, Andrew O'Dwyer, and Ignatius Price. Brother Fintan was the first principal until May, 1891, then Dwyer.

In 1896 Brother Alphonsus Delany, visiting Australia on behalf of the Superior General in Ireland, purchased the land the College presently stands on. It was an ambitious purchase but not as ambitious as the original plans for the College building. So ambitious in fact that Brother Delany's original design was never able to be completed. However, up until 1919 the size of the College property continued to grow until it was twice its present area of 12 hectares - this included a piece of river (Parramatta River) frontage for rowing and bathing. With the need for new facilities, the financial drain of the Great Depression, and the absence of Government support for the first seventy years, much of this property had to be sold.

The College has had to endure the most difficult years of Australia's European history: World War One; the Great Flu Epidemic of 1919; the Great Depression of 1929; and World War Two. These provided severe hardships for the Brothers, students, parents, and the pastors of the area, but through these difficulties a bond was forged and a spirit deepened which enabled the College to survive and even grow during these years.

With its one hundred year plus history the College has had twenty-two Brothers as Principal, and these Brothers and their staffs have seen many changes and developments, many school and personal achievements, many ex-students to be especially proud of, and many parents and friends to be grateful to. The modern College campus can boast of all the modern facilities: several computer labs, specialist music rooms, newly renovated science labs, and much more. The students enjoy a natural environment with acres of grass, tress, and gardens. We are indeed most fortunate to have available sporting facilities for the major sports of basketball, tennis, cricket, soccer, and rugby league. We enjoy a tradition which has been moulded and enhanced by the Patrician Brothers, the staff and students of the College, and so many parents and friends, for more than one hundred years.
