Annual Luncheon The Catholic Club, Castlereagh Street, Sydney proved to be a popular venue and we are returning there this year on Sunday, October 10th. Please note the date on your calendar. How do we do it? The cost to attend has not increased since the first Dinner held at the Glebe Rowing Club in 1993. At the Luncheon last year, it was brought to the writer’s attention that some had wished to attend but don’t write cheques nor do they trust banks. Please do not let that stop you coming along. Just give Kevin Scott a call on 9975 6481 and an arrangement will be made. We look forward to seeing you at the Luncheon. Booking details will be in the September issue of The Green Sash.
The postman sputters by on his motorbike, pauses and motors on. Curiosity drives the writer to the mail-box to find a plain envelope containing perhaps a program of an event from the past, photos, or as happened in May, a computer disk which when downloaded filled the screen with four wonderful photos of the 1950s/1960s. These events are thrilling and the Editorial Committee wishes to express its thanks to those who share their memories with us. The writer also sought some photos from Brother Basil Downey in respect to an article to appear in the September 2004 issue. However there is little space for photos in September and so you will find them on this and in following pages. The photo below was taken in 1988 at Tullow, Co. Carlow.

(RIP), Bro. Cronan O’Meara,
Neville Taylor writes: ‘It is my First Communion photo, it must have been 1954.’ Monsignor Cyril Bertrand Callaghan (RIP), Parish Priest of Forest Lodge, 1953-1966, is centre front.
The above is a swimming squad, Neville does not recall the year,
It is grand to receive photographs of Brothers associated with their endeavours such as that shown below. We see Brother Bernard Bulfin with a fine looking 1962 Rugby League Open Grade team. Again, Neville Taylor does not remember all the names. If any of our readers can assist in identifying those unnamed, please contact Kevin Scott. The address and phone number are shown under our banner on the front page. Remember all contained in THE GREEN SASH adds to the history of the Patrician Brothers in Australia. Certainly, if advised, the names will be added to that which appears on the Patrician Brothers websits and also included in our own computer record.
Back Row: L. Jackson, Warren Small, P. Bowtell, D. (Al) Morgan, 5?, Brother Bernard Bulfin (Coach), 2nd Row: Paul Alleyne, M. Hickey, P. Whittingham, Terry Simmonds, Neville Taylor. Front Row: 1?, 2?, 3? ------------------------------------------
Brother Bernard arrived from Ireland in the company of Brother Callistus Keating on December 27, 1955. He taught at Blacktown, Forest Lodge, Fairfield and Ryde. Brother Benard was a Principal at Patrician Brothers schools for 34 years; at Blacktown 1966-1988 and Fairfield 1991-2001. We congratulate Brother Bernard on his outstanding contribution to Catholic education in NSW over a period of 46 years. Brother Bernard currently is active in hospital and jail visitation. The photo below shows Brother Bernard Bulfin with the Forest Lodge Intermediate Class of 1962. They were a fine looking group of young men. Again we seek you help in identifying the unnamed.
------------------------------------------------ We also extend our congratulations to Brother Basil Downey and Brother Cronan O’Meara who this year celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of their first profession of Religious Vows as Patrician Brothers made at Tullow, Co. Carlow on August 15, 1944. Brother Basil taught at Forest Lodge, Waterloo, Granville, Ryde, Redfern, Sefton and Liverpool, where he was Primary Principal 1966-1988. Following retirement from teaching Brother Basil commenced parish work in Sadleir-Miller and later at Liverpool which included school visits and visitations to the elderly in their homes and nursing homes to administer communion. He presently tends the lawns and gardens at Blacktown Brother Cronan has taught at Ryde, Forest Lodge, Waterloo, Granville, Liverpool, Blacktown and Fairfield. He has spent time at Aitape and Nuku in Papua New Guinea and is currently in mission work at Thursday Island Below are two photos taken at Forest Lodge. The first is of a young Brother Basil Downey with the 1954 Third Class. Brother Basil does not recall the names of the pupils, but the writer is sure that is a Hoolahan lad in the front row, third from the left The other is of Brother Basil Downey, Brother Cyril Boland (RIP) and Brother Raphael Carty in 1959
On this page we feature three Brothers who set out on their journey to Sydney from Tullow, Co. Carlow on August 6, 1949. Brother Basil Downey records that the first photo was ‘taken in 1949 outside ‘The Castle’, Mount St. Joseph’s, Tullow’, prior to their departure. The other was taken in 1997.
Brother Paul O’Connor (RIP) recorded: ‘The Patrician Brothers school at Sefton operated for four years, 1961-1964. The school was closed on December 17, 1964, in the general rationalization and reorganization of Catholic schools conducted by the Catholic Education Office in view of the Wyndham system’ Shown below is the Sefton monastery and Brother Basil Downey with the 1962 Fifth Class of 60 boys.
Here is Brother Basil again. We find him aboard the SS Largs Bay on the voyage from Southampton to Sydney in 1949. The Brothers had found the sunlight far too bright and had purchased sunglasses. As you can see by the cap they had not yet reached the tropics. The other is Brother Basil at feeding time at Tanvey, Co. Roscommon, Ireland, in 1992
Here we have an interesting photo of those responsible for the printing of The Catholic Weekly in the late 1940s. As you can see it was not a large work force, but the writer had difficulty in identifying those hanging on the words of His Eminence, Norman Cardinal Gilroy (RIP). It must be remembered that the Cardinal was a Glebe boy, but owing to residing on the wrong side of Mitchell Street, Glebe, his family fell within the then boundary of St. Benedict’s Parish. The result was that young Norman Gilroy went to Marist Brothers on Abercrombie Street in the Parish of Chippendale. In later years the boundary was moved more towards Broadway. The tall young man in the photo is Kelvin Harris, who attended Forest Lodge for a time from 1934 and later was very active in the Forest Lodge (Catholic) 6th Glebe scouts becoming the second Scout Master of the troop. He was also involved in the CYO (Catholic Youth Organisation) in boxing, rugby league and tennis. As a child Kelvin swallowed a caustic substance by accident, damaging his stomach and digestive system. This led him to delay starting school until he was seven years of age. This late start in education did not stop him obtaining his apprenticeship in the printing industry. Kelvin has always had a great love of country life and spent most of his working life in Griffith. He and wife Jean, in retirement, reside on the South Coast. The names are from left: Mr Nielan (the boss), Kelvin, Mr Jamieson, Mr Stoddard, both compositors, Mr. Wilson, Mr. Burrows, linotypers, Mr Lynch, publisher and Mr. McArdle, printer. Kelvin, being an apprentice, was required to address the other staff as ‘Mister’ and never knew their Christian names! Oh, and of course, I think then, His Grace, Archbishop Gilroy. ![]()
The last of our photos come from our Northern Beaches correspondent Cheri Nolan. The first is a Forest Lodge Debut photo taken circa 1947.
Back Row: Patricia Hutchinson, Cheri Holland, Margaret McQuade, Joan Jones, Patricia O’Connor, 6?, 7? 2nd Row: 1?, Sadie Eves, Dorothy Embleton, Elva Freeman, 6?, Shirley Coyle Front Row: Brenda Tilley, Maureen O’Shea, Meg. Hickey, Eileen Paxton, Patricia Bloomfield
The above is a Communion group at Forest Lodge, Cheri and husband
Wally Nolan are both there. Father Delaney is the priest; later PP at Harbord.
Cheri says: “A great coincidence ? Wally, me and our five children all
made our First Communion with Father Delaney.”
PATRICIAN BROTHERS COMBINED SCHOOLS
To assist the reader in identifying the Brothers we include the surname
and community below.
It was tight, but we managed to include all on this page. Many thanks
to Michael Kelly, who attended Forest Lodge for a time and later was a
fellow oarsman of the Glebe Rowing Club.
Martin Henry Jackson (RIP), alumnus of Forest Lodge, died February 16, 2004 at Tweed Heads, NSW in his 76th year. We join with Joan, family and brother Frank in mourning his passing. He was received into the Novitiate on August 15, 1958 and made his first profession of Religious Vows as a Patrician Brother on August 15, 1959. Brother Joseph arrived from Ireland on October 7, 1961 and taught at Sefton, Liverpool, Ryde and Granville where he was Principal for 18 years, 1978-1995. At the time of his passing Brother Joseph, a member of the Casula Community, was involved in counselling and working in home-school liaison at Magdalene Catholic High School, Narellan. We join with his brethren and relatives in mourning his passing. Requiescant in pace. THOSE WHO DIE IN GRACE GO NO FURTHER FROM US THAN TO GOD AND GOD IS VERY NEAR.. |
