On Saturday the 4th June,
Deacon Ron Peters was ordained by Bishop Peter Ingham as a priest of
the Wollongong diocese.
Ron Peters, an ex-student of Patrician Brothers' College,
Fairfield, was a Patrician Brother for over twenty years. He was
a popular classroom teacher; inspiring staff member; exceptional
Religious Education co-ordinator; innovative vocations/formation
director; a man of prayer who enjoyed and enlivened any Patrician
community he was a member of. (Photo:

fore-front of proposing ordination for some of the Brothers so
primarily they could act as school chaplains. Eventually the
Congregation, after much discussion and prayer, decided that this was
not an option. So it was not all that surprising that Ron eventually
made the choice to leave the Brothers and to become a priest. While
very disappointed to loose Ron, the Brothers were delighted that he was
able to make the difficult decision to follow what he believed Christ
was calling him to.
It was then on a magnificent Saturday morning then that hundreds of family and friends gathered at the sea-side Cathedral of Wollongong to witness Ron's ordination to priesthood. His road to ordination after leaving the Brothers had taken five years with time spent in study (some in Rome) and ministry in parishes, schools, and the women's gaol at Berrima.
It was an excellent ceremony and
obviously much thought and time had been put into its preparation. Two
bishops were present, Peter Ingham who was once parish priest at Ryde,
and David Cremin also a long-time friend
