Br Mark Ryan recently felt inclined to
travel to some of the NSW towns where the Brothers had once taught and
where some had died. He wanted to find their resting places. It's a

I have always been
attracted to the history of the Congregation and with the
bicentenary occurring in 2008 I decided to track down the graves of the
pioneer Brothers. I was particularly interested in locating the burial
places of those at Goulburn, Maitland, Bathurst and Orange. Apart from
the natural curiosity involved in finding these graves I was most
anxious to view the headstones and to determine if they needed
restoring.A visit to the Family History section at the Mitchell Library provided me with maps of the cemeteries, contacts at the local Councils and an approximate location of the deceased Brothers. On Tuesday July 5 I
drove to Goulburn hoping to find Br Louis
Hynes at the Kenmore Roman Catholic Cemetery. Instead I found Brian
Ohlback very much alive and the officer in charge of the Goulburn and
district cemeteries. Imagine my delight on meeting this
gentleman, and he with a large leather bound tome under his arm! All to
no avail however. We could not discover a headstone but ascertained
that Louis was buried next to Ada, Henry and Francis SOTHERAN. A
disappointing day. The physical appearance of this section of the
cemetery was rundown. Many of the headstones broken and in pieces. I
can only assume that Louis’s headstone had met the same fate and the
pieces removed. (Breaking news 2/09/05) On Thursday July 7
it was off
to Maitland. Previously I had visited the Campbell’s Hill Cemetery with
my brother Barry and failed to find Benedict Sweeney and Regis Keogh.
This time I was more thorough. I called in at the Newcastle Family
History Centre and the Maitland Council Chambers where I met
Laura Smith the special project officer. Armed with a new map I went to
the cemetery once more and after five minutes Bingo! There they
were, both in the same plot with fading inscriptions. They
have a
north-east aspect and
