In Tullow, Ireland, on the mid-morning of the 15th of
August, 1955, a group of young men gathered in the monastery chapel to
make their First Profession as Patrician Brothers before a small group
of Brothers and familes. One of these young men, he had only just
turned seventeen, was Kevin Barry, son of Helen and John Barry, younger
brother to Eamonn and Sean, and older brother to Patrick. Kevin took
the religious name of Charles.
In Fairfield, Australia, on the mid-afternoon of the 14th of August,
2005, a hundred-strong group made up of Brothers, family members,
Patrician affiliates, and Patrician friends, gathered in the chapel of
the Patrician Brothers’ College, to pay tribute to three seasoned men
on the occasion of their Golden Jubilee of Religious Profession: fifty
years a Patrician. One of these men was Brother Charles Barry, the
other two were Lucian Phelan (India) and Nicholas Leahy (Kenya), who
had joined Charles here in Australia so they could celebrate together.

Br
Mark Ryan & choir: a very generous & happy & gifted group

The comfortable College chapel was snugly filled by the assembly. It
was even able to accommodate an organist and an accompanying six-strong
choir who had been practising for several weeks and who added
significantly to the celebratory nature of the Eucharist. Making up the
congregation were twenty Brothers, Charles’s niece Mary-Rose and her
husband Chris and daughter Elenor, and far too many other people to
mention
