Parish Ministry

The Patrician Brothers were founded to minister to a contemporary pressing need: education of the youth. And this is what most Patrician Brothers have been doing since our foundation in 1808.

However, under the influence of Vatican II and in the face of the "new" needs of our modern world, religious congregations have been discerning how they may repsond.

Several of our Brothers have volunteered to meet other needs within our society: as campus ministers, a hospital chaplain, parish workers, and as officers in the Catholic Education Office.

 Thursday Island

Brother Thomas Rice, originally from the green isle of Ireland, is a schoolie from way back. He has done virtually all that a person can do within a school: incredibly successful in the classroom and on the playing field; the pathfinder of Careers Education in secondary schools; primary school principal; receiver of public awards. He originally moved to Thursday Island to teach in the Sacred Heart Primary School immediately adjacent to the Brothers' house. He was taking the place of Brother Paul O'Keeffe who had been principal at the school but was being called by his province to be its leader. After a very successful but short period in the classroom of Sacred Heart Primary, Thomas felt drawn to work in the parish.
In the parish Thomas oganises many of the liturgies, especially for the special occasions. He supports families in their time of need. He does this with prayer, being with them, and sometimes with a cup of tea.

He has continued with his parent education activities. He runs courses to help parents "understand'" their teenage children, and he provides parents with teaching aides to help them in their role as primary religious educators of their children.

In his "Outreach" programme, Thomas will look out for those in need to see what he can do to assist. This may be to find clothing and food for patients who come to the hospital; it could also be providing transport or finding the means for further travelling by people who come to help. Thomas will also help parents with sick children.

Something of a delight for Thomas is his work with the senior citizens of Thursday Island. Taking Communion to them; spending time with them sharing stories or reading the newspaper to them; running the Bingo and organising a weekly Mass; and driving them to the shops or just taking them  for a drive.

Thomas has always approached any task with enthusiasm, diligence, and creativity. The people he is presently administering to would be benefiting from this. But they are probably appreciating even more his warmth and jovial nature.
