Australian Patrician Necrology

Kevin Scott, producer of "The Green Sash", has done it again! This time he has used his energy, investigatory skills, and generosity to the Patrician Brothers to produce this necrology of Brothers who have served in Australia.

 The purpose of this listing - a work in progress, especially the photographs - is to consolidate registrations of death of Brothers of the Australian and New Guinea Province with further information obtained from other sources.

Registrations appear under the Christian/Fraternal name first shown.
 

[1] Registration under surname O’Dwyer.
[2] Registration under surname McCauley. 
[3] Registration under the name of Cornelius McSweeney, Br. Benedict‘s age was stated to be 20 years and 9 months. Shown as 24 years in the Liber Defunctorum. Finding this registration was based on the ‘Dwyers’ dropping the ‘O’. I premised that perhaps ‘Sweeney’ had dropped the ‘Mc’ and I was aware that his Christian name commenced with ‘C’. Eureka!
[4] Registration under surname O’Keefe and is so shown by Bro Stanislaus Bergin in the list of ‘Brothers in the Province on March 17, 1909’ [Annals p.20]. Believe ‘O’Keeffe’ to be correct spelling.

[6] Registration shows Basil Bernard Cassidy. Br. Stanislaus Bergin recorded Basil Brian in Annals. 
[7] Christian name of Br. Dominic John O’Neill established from Death Certificate of Br. Benedict Sweeney. ‘John D. O’Neill’ was the informant “in whose presence (the) deceased died.”
[8] Christian name and confirmation of spelling of surname of Brother Dominic Michael Bourke (Informant) established from Death Certificate of Brother Stanislaus Michael Maher
[9] Brother Linus Walker indicated that ‘Kilcop’ was maiden name of Br. Fintan’s mother. He further stated that Brother Albert Small believed Brother Fintan came from (the Parish of) Clonoulty on the Fethard side. Brother Stanislaus Bergin indicated Killcop to be a Townland of ‘Fetheride’ or similar spelling in Co. Tipperary. [To check ‘Kilcop’ and ‘Killcop’ in General Alphabetical Index of Townlands, Towns, Parishes and Baronies of Ireland ? Census of Ireland, 1851.]
[10] Brother John Maher never reached these shores. Taken ill aboard SS Rome on way to Sydney, he disembarked at Colombo. SS Rome arrived Sydney September 4, 1884. Brother John Maher should never be forgotten. But what of the Brother who accompanied him from the vessel at Colombo, believed to be Brother Michael English? Sadly, we know not of his destiny.
[11] Some doubt exists as to Brother Baptist McGrath’s year of birth. Br Stanislaus Bergin recorded Br Baptist’s birth-date as June 3, 1872. If this date were correct Br. Baptist would have been only 16 years of age on his arrival in 1888. He entered the Order on September 1, 1885, aged 14 years, which seems to indicate the year should read 1871. Br. Baptist died on February 13, 1945, aged 75 (Death Certificate) indicating he was born in 1869. It seems that 1870 should apply, indicating Br Baptist died in his 75th year.

Deaths registered at Petersham or North Sydney indicate death occurred at Lewisham Hospital conducted by the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary or Mater Misericordiae Hospital, Crows Nest conducted by the Sisters of Mercy, respectively. This knowledge assisted in identifying the registrations of Brothers Finian Byrne, Thomas Hunt and Killlian O’Keeffe. Previous applications, for various reasons, had been unsuccessful.
